Document: The Dynamics of The Informal Sector In South Africa: A Case Study of Day Labourers in Pretoria
Description
Unemployment is one of the major macroeconomic problems facing South Africa. Many workers who are unable to find employment in the formal sector hope to find some income from work in the informal sector. The activities of day labourers developed as a result of this. The aim of this paper is two fold. The first objective is to address the lack of research on informal labour markets by focusing on the day labourers in Pretoria as a case study. The second objective is to investigate the
dynamics underpinning the labour market of day labourers in Pretoria. This case study proved that many activities in the informal sector can not provide a permanent
solution to unemployment. Being a day labourer is no exception.
