Document: Gauteng Provincial Economic Review and Outlook 2010 (PERO)

Description

PERO cover

The 2010 Provincial Economic Review and Outlook (PERO) provides a comprehensive analysis of macroeconomic issues at national, provincial and municipal levels. In the first quarter of 2009, the country’s economy entered into recession which led to the loss of approximately 870,000 and 232,000 jobs during that year and the first half of 2010 respectively. The South African economy started to regain momentum in the fourth quarter of 2009. The growth rate in the first quarter of 2010 provided some hope of better growth prospects, but was however followed by a slowdown during the second quarter.

This publication also gives special attention to the manufacturing subsector, simply because of its significance, as it is the third largest contributor to both the national and provincial economies. Manufacturing is the second largest employer in Gauteng, and investing within this sector can generate employment and economic growth.
