Document: Mbombela Business Portfolio 2011: A directory of businesses in the Mbombela Local Municipality
Description
The local business sector is sophisticated and exceptionally diverse. Manufacturing accounts for approximately a third of the local economy, financial and business services for 16%, trade for 13% and transport and communications for 12%.
Agriculture, including extensive fruit and forestry sectors, are important contributors to local and regional output. As the financial hub of a province with pristine, almost limitless tourism potential, Mbombela is a magnet for leisure and business travellers who enjoy its mix of first-class facilities, lively entertainment and accommodation, natural beauty and relaxed, welcoming feel.
Major retail and commercial banks are well represented in Mbombela and the area is the provincial headquarters of several of South Africa’s largest listed companies. There is a thriving small- and medium-sized business community which is active in most sectors of the economy. Upmarket shopping malls, supermarkets, large wholesalers and a vast array of arts, crafts and curios draw visitors from throughout the Lowveld and neighbouring countries.
