Event: Strengthening Local Economic Development in the Second Decade of Democracy in South Africa

The Democracy Development Programme extends an invitation to you to attend our 7th annual Local Governance Conference. The Democracy Development Programme will be applying the theme "Strengthening Local Economic Development for the Second Decade of Democracy in South Africa”.

Whilst South Africa has an impressive range of laws, policies and funding mechanisms for promoting LED, the results in terms of output and successes have been mixed and limited. The current global recession and the increased levels of poverty in the country make it critical that sustainable local economic development becomes a key concern on every municipal agenda.

This conference aims to deal with the nuts and bolts of LED ranging from procurement to high level policy decisions and brings together practitioners, officials, entrepreneurs and civil society institutions. It is a conference not to be missed.

The programme will be co-ordinated by Professor PS Reddy of the University of kwaZulu-Natal School of Public Administration and Development Management. Confirmed speakers include senior municipal officials, senior officials from the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA); prominent representatives of the donor and business sectors, and academics from University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban University of Technology and University of Johannesburg.

Keynote addresses will be delivered by Nomusa Dube - KZN MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, and Yunus Carrim - Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
