Event: Development Dialogue Seminar: Does What You Export Matter? In Search of Empirical Guidance of Industrial Policies

Dr. Daniel Lederman is Senior Economist in the World Bank's Development Economics Research Group (DECRG). Prior to joining the Development Research Group of the World Bank in 2007, Dr. Lederman was senior economist at the Office of the Chief Economist, Latin America and the Caribbean, at the World Bank. He also worked at the Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean in Washington. Dr. Lederman has a PhD from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, Washington, D.C.
An economist and political scientist by training, Dr. Lederman has written extensively on issues related to financial crises in emerging markets, violent crime, political economy of economic reforms, institutional reforms, economic growth, innovation, as well as international trade. His recent publications include China’s and India’s Challenge to Latin America: Opportunity or Threat?, edited jointly with Marcelo Olarreaga and Guillermo E. Perry (2009, Washington, DC: World Bank, Latin American Development Forum Series). Dr. Lederman has also extensively published in Journals. His recent publications include:
- “Export Promotion Agencies: Do They Work?” in Journal of Development Economics, vol. 91(2), 257-265, March 2010, together with Marcelo Olarreaga and Lucy Payton;
- “An International Multilevel Analysis of Product Innovation”, Journal of International Business Studies, vol. 41, 606-610, May 2009;
- “Agriculture and National Welfare around the World” in El Trimestre Económico, No. 303, 577-618, July 2009, together with Claudio Bravo-Ortega.
Dr Lederman will present his recent research piece prepared with William F. Maloney, Lead Economist from the Development Economics Research Group of the World Bank. Dr Maloney has published extensively on issues related to international trade and finance, informality, developing country labour markets, innovation and growth. Dr Lederman will be accompanied by his colleague, Alberto Behar. Alberto studied at the University of Cape Town and attained his doctorate in Economics from the University of Oxford. Prior to joining the World Bank, he was a post-doctoral research fellow in the Centre for the Study of African Economies in Oxford and he has published in the fields of Labour Economics and International Trade.
