The Commonwealth Good Practice Scheme Project is currently running in six countries namely, India, Jamaica, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Pakistan and South Africa. The project’s focus in South Africa is Local Economic Development (LED) and it seeks to address targeted municipalities’ capacity challenges around (LED). The Scheme promotes mutual exchanges, learning and good practice between partner municipalities. This is done through technical exchanges, collaborative working, pilot projects, and sharing of good practice.
Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) in partnership with South Africa Local Government Association (SALGA) are jointly implementing a Good Practice Scheme Project in South Africa. The three and half years project is currently being implemented in Mbombela Local Municipality, Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, eThekwini Municipality, Buffalo City Municipality, Vhembe District Municipality, Amathole District Municipality and Mopani District Municipality. This phase of Good practice Scheme follows a 2nd phase in which seven municipal partnerships were involved and the discussion will focus on one of the partnership.
The roundtable discussion’s objectives are as follows;
- To provide a platform for the focus municipalities to share their learning and outcomes with other GPS participating and non participating municipalities.
- To enable SALGA to identify key emerging issues from the event which will feed into its lobby and advocacy role.
- To provide Government Departments the opportunity to identify issues that can inform policy and create an enabling environment for local governments to effectively operate.
- To create and opportunity for development partners to engage with the work of local government and explore opportunities for further support.
- To enable participants to make recommendations on the Good Practice Scheme Project and issues emerging from the focus municipalities.
