Event: Forum: Community Responsible Mining Initiative (CRMI)
Date:
28. June 2011 - 29. June 2011 Mining is SA's single greatest revenue earner and a critically important contributor to GDP and economic growth. Yet the mining communities who support and underpin the Industry have historically not always shared the benefits flowing from the extraction of these rich natural resources.
A major new initiative, the Community Responsible Mining Initiative (CRMI), seeks to redress this anomaly by bringing together key-role players and stakeholders - both from within the mining industry itself as well as from host communities - traditional leaders, civil society and local government, among others.
The initiative will be given impetus through a major participatory event, the Community Responsible Mining Forum, to be held at the Balalaika Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg on 28 and 29 June 2011. The Forum will provide an opportunity for interaction between mining leaders, operators and other key decision-makers on the one hand, and host community leaders, the NGO sector, policy-makers, government officials and legislators on the other.
Important topical items to be discussed include:
- LED initiatives,
- enterprise procurement,
- environmental concerns,
- safety in mining,
- issues affecting host communities and traditional leaders.
