NFP Fellowships for training course in Local Economic Development (LED) at The Hague Academy for Local Governance

Course introduction

This course is about strengthening the economic capacity of a regional community in such a way that it makes optimal use of the potential and characteristics of the area. It discusses strategies, tools and approaches to improve conditions for economic growth and job creation.

Questions that will be addressed are:

  • How to develop a vision for the area together with citizens, businesses and NGOs?
  • How to support farmers and small businesses in creating job opportunities and improving food security?
  • And how to secure local interests vis-a-vis central government, multinationals and foreign investors?

We will visit projects supporting small entrepreneurs, agricultural programmes and initiatives to promote tourism.

The experts

The latest expertise and insights will be made available in this course, through a combination of lectures from visiting experts, exercises and study visits. Contributions come from practitioners in the fields related to Local Economic Development with world-wide experience. During the training you will have the opportunity to share your experiences with them and each other and ask their opinion about issues you deal with.

Learning objectives - This course will help you to:

  • asses the economic and political context for regional development;
  • identify challenges and opportunities for strengthening the local economy and job creation together with stakeholders at local, regional and national level;
  • develop approaches for strategic local economic planning;
  • get acquainted with practical tools for supporting the local economy.

After successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of The Hague Academy for Local Governance.

Practical information

The course fee is € 2.890,-. This includes all training-related costs, as well as drinks, lunches, training materials and travel during the training programme. Travel to and from The Hague and accommodation is not included. The course language is English.

The Netherlands organisation for international cooperation in higher education (NUFFIC) offers the opportunity to apply for a fellowship for this training course, as part of the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) for short courses. To see if you are eligible for a fellowship and to learn more about the rules and regulations regarding the fellowship, please see www.nuffic.nl/nfp.

If you would like to apply for this NFP fellowship you have to:

  • Send us your application form for this training course and

Eligibility:

To be eligible for an NFP fellowship you must:

  • be a mid-career professional with at least three years’ relevant work experience;
  • be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries on the NFP country list valid at the time of application;
  • be nominated by your employer, who pledges to continue paying your salary and guarantees that you will be able to return to the same or an equivalent position at the end of your fellowship period;
  • have been unconditionally admitted by a Dutch institution to one of the Master’s degree programmes or Short courses on the 2012-2013 course list, or have agreed upon a PhD research proposal with the Dutch institution. This means that you must have met all the academic requirements set by the Dutch institution;

Scholarship Description: From the 1st of November 2011 you can apply for a NFP fellowship of Nuffic for our two-week training course Local Economic Development. This training course starts 10 September 2012. The course is about strengthening the economic capacity of a regional community in such a way that it makes optimal use of the potential and characteristics of the area. It discusses strategies, tools and approaches to improve conditions for economic growth and job creation. 

Deadline

This training course is registered in the Nuffic list of short courses. If you are interested in applying for the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) you have to do so before 1 February 2012! Please see Nuffic's website for details about the application procedure.

Non NFP fellowship applications should be received before 13 July 2012. Application forms need to be completed in full to be entered into the selection process.
