Description
Mopani District Municipality’s strategic objectives focus is on the provision of basic services to the communities. The District’s local economic development is centred on the launching of SMME anchor projects. For example the district seeks to develop and provide access to commercial farming, launch agricultural and community projects such as baking, fence‐making, brick making, poultry and sewing. The District aims to provide tourism skills, tourism awareness training and upgrading of tourism attraction sites in the district. The district aims at assisting emerging tourism product owners with tourism marketing skills, and the development of new tourism products such as Agro‐Tourism and Cultural Tourism.
Critical infrastructure
Mopani District Municipality is located in the north east of Limpopo Province. It comprises of five local municipalities namely Phalaborwa, Greater Tzaneen, Greater Giyani, Maruleng and Greater Letaba. It has an estimated population of around 1, 1 million. The district has three major towns namely Phalaborwa, Tzaneen and Modjadjiskloof. There are other smaller towns like Giyani but the levels of urbanisation are low.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Development in the district is fragmented because of apartheid planning. Land ownership in the District is contentious with large tracts of land that are subject to land claims lodged with the Land claims Commissioner. The district is agro‐ based and the land claims have negatively affected production on the land under dispute. The district is facing challenges around the provision of services to the communities especially in the provision of adequate schools. The same applies to the provision of housing and energy.
