Smallholder Agriculture in SA
Dear SA LED Network Member,
On 05 October 2011, the SA LED Network held its 2011 Review & Outlook Discussion with its key partners, LED stakeholders as well as representatives from the SALGA Provincial Offices. The aim of the discussion was to recap on the Network’s activities in 2011 and to provide an outlook for the Network in 2012. An article on the results of the discussion can be found here.
Document: We've added a paper, written by Maxwell Mudhara from the University of KZN, that looks at the factors underlying the demise of the role and contribution of smallholder agriculture in South Africa. In particular, it focuses on the effects of lack of extension support and infrastructural development suitable for the needs of the smallholder farmers. Event: From 10 - 12 November, the AgriWorks Farmers Expo is held for the second time in Stellenbosch. The expo aims to attract local farming communities and visitors throughout the region and even to attract visitors nationally. To find out more please click here.
Event: Also, the Agriculture Investment Summit 2011 takes place in Johannesburg from 14 - 17 November. It is Africa’s only conference and business zone dedicated to growing the investment and finance in the agri sector on the continent and fully utilising investor funds for growth of the soft commodity asset class. Tender: The IMPACT (Innovative Models Promoting Adaptation and Climate Technologies) Business Award rewards enterprises that apply innovative business solutions in combating Climate Change. The IMPACT Business Award implemented on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and organised by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) will make a total of up to five International Awards available in 2011.
